Nakagawa Yumiko

Choice

My father was very eager for me to become a ballerina, and my whole family knew that the level of ballet arts in Russia is extremely high. When I was a child, I watched performances of Russian dancers a lot. That is how I made up my mind to study at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy.

Vivid memory

All gala shows and ballets I took part in are among my vivid memories. That includes, for instance, La Fille Mal Gardée, which I took part in in December 2017. In that ballet, I performed the Gipsy Dance solo. Also, my memories include lessons in classical dance, where I used 100% of my skills and ability, as well as other professional disciplines, because we were taught and trained by real masters.

My teachers

In my junior years, Lyudmila Kovalenko was my classical dance teacher. She taught us the basics we had been lacking. She also was very meticulous about little things. Not everyone of us, her students, had been endowed by nature with excellent talent, so Ms. Kovalenko gave us a lot of individual advice, in order to nurture our skills. I remember her classes very well. In my 3rd year, Anna Antonicheva taught us classical dance. She also coached me to perform a few solo variations, and that joint work was challenging, thrilling and interesting.

Career

Right upon my graduation, I joined ballet company of the Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theater. Since 2021, I have been a ballerina of the Voronezh Opera and Ballet Theater, where I perform a number of principal parts.

Important thing

The most important thing bestowed upon me at the Academy was a solid knowledge of the basics of classical, folk and character dance, as well as acting techniques and many other things. I also cherish my proficiency in Russian. Over my school years, I learned a lot about the history of ballet arts and plunged into the universe of theater arts.

Goals

I would like to use my expertise in Japan, my homeland, and little-by-little I have been trying to realize my plans. I have started to teach ballet. One of my students has received prizes at a number of international ballet contests.

Wishes

My advice to future foreign students of the Academy is Be Not Afraid! Splendid people work at the Academy, and they will always help and counsel you. I am very proud to have studied at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, and I am more than sure you will also be able to gain a lot of valuable knowledge in the company of great people. Best of luck to you all!
